Technoserve is an NGO that enabled the creation of the Duromina cooperative to help farmers create washing stations to increase the sustainability and quality of coffees in western Ethiopia with transparent and respectful production. environment, and increased bonuses for producers. From inception, they have used eco-friendly pulpers and built water treatment systems that naturally filter produced water before it is pumped into lagoons to be absorbed into the earth. They also implemented farmer training programs and implemented a traceability system.
There are farmers in this region with farms of up to 3 hectares, which is a large farm by Ethiopian standards. However, the average farm size of smallholders is half a hectare. Most coffees are organic by default. A farmer typically has less than 1500 trees per hectare, and one tree typically produces cherries equivalent to 100 to 200 grams of green coffee.
